The brothers Umberto and Bernardo Valle
(above) bought the estate Poggio Trevvalle in 1998 with the intention of making
a good Morellino di Scansano.
The estate covers an area of 23 hectares of which 10 are currently productive
and it is placed in the northern corner of the Morellino di Scansano doc area,
confining with the Montecucco doc area. In fact, a couple of hectares are in the
Montecucco doc area, and in the future the estate could produce a Montecucco
wine, as well.
When the Valle brothers arrived, the lands
that are mainly exposed to the south were already partly covered with vines, so
after a couple of years of planting new vines they succeeded to produce two
excellent Morellino's, "Fròndina" a young, fruity and ready wine, and the crù
"Larcille" a complex wine made with a selection of the best grapes. The first is
partly matured in second passage French barriques of 250hl for approx. 4 months
and partly in traditional cement, and the latter in new barrels of French oak of
500hl for at least 12 months.
All the barriques used are of the best quality
and they are all of different make. The brothers reason this choice to avoid
that the wines "taste like they were a barrique manufacturer's
wine".
The grapes used are mainly Sangiovese (the clone used in this area is called
Morellino), Ciliegiolo and Alicante.
The assemblage takes place just before the wine is ready to be bottled where
after it is left to mature in the bottle for 3-5 months before released.
It is still not clear which other wine will be
made in the future, but the brothers are sure to
enlarge the production with a new wine from the northern vineyards that are also
exposed to the north and that will be "of a completely different taste".
